Very pleased to have finally wrapped up an exciting book project. I've been illustrating a cycling book to be published by Lawrence King and Magma Books next year. I can't really show too much of the illustrations but here are a couple of sneak peaks.. It's full of illustrations of bikes, events, components etc.

The day after these drawings I had a commission for NY Times with a quick turn around for which I was able to try some new things out; so really pleased I took the time to do these drawings.

New Statesman Cover

Here is a run through of the cover that I recently was commissioned to illustrate for New Statesman magazine. This was a fairly last minute weekend turnaround, with the work coming through on Friday afternoon and deadline on Monday afternoon. The brief was quite prescriptive and the art director had a pretty clear idea of the image that was required. They wanted a hill to the right with a busy slum and to the left on an adjacent hill was a large mansion, with the slum seeming to tower over the mansion. I found some decent reference of favelas in Brazil that would be a good base for the slum drawing. I worked on the illustration in a similar way to the German Wings landscape that I drew earlier in the year. First I roughly penciled in the shape of the hill and then filled in the buildings using a small range of colours. This was pretty time consuming and took almost a whole day to fill in. Here is a scan from early on in the drawing.

Once the main image was drawn any further changes could be made or added in using Photoshop. There had to be a dark area to the bottom and space in the top left for the title and other front page copy.

There had been a late change on Monday morning from the design team and the mansion had to be replaced with skyscrapers to emphasise the rich vs poor feeling of the cover. These were drawn to fit over the existing mansion and hill and then cropped in on the computer.

The left side of the slum also had to be cropped to allow more room for the titles and emphasise the hill. I then added in a blue wash for the sky which helped tie the whole thing together.

This was a really tight deadline when taking into account the last minute changes and level of detail involved in the drawing. Very pleased though with the end result and ultimately the changes did make for a better cover image.

Architecture Foundation, Urban Pioneers Canada Water

Last week I was asked by The Architecture Foundation to run a drawing workshop as part of their ongoing Urban Pioneers program for 16-17 year old Londoners. The week long course was taking place this year around Canada Water in Rotherhithe, South East London. We spent the day going through several observational drawing exercises taking in the sights along the Thames and the old docks.

The day went really well, with a big thanks to Tom Keeley from the AF, and it was a massive plus with all the kids being really enthusiastic and open to some potentially embarrassing drawing exercises. Below are a few of my drawings from the day. You can see some of the previous Urban Pioneers projects here.

German Wings Illustrations

I've recently received a copy of GW Magazine through the post in which I've done a series of illustrations. I was commissioned to illustrate three walks through different geographical regions of Germany, a page showing what to pack when hiking, and a landscape typical of rural Germany. I thought that i'd share the process of creating the finished landscape illustration.

The image that I chose to use was from an old 1970's reference book of Germany that I bought from Deptford market a few years ago. I've drawn from the same image in the past in one of my sketchbooks and at Pick Me Up and felt that it would work nicely in colour for this job. Below is the old sketch that I did. I would have loved to use my own reference but unfortunately i've not got a great deal of countryside snaps.

I then worked this up for the rough. As this image was to be almost full page with the title of the article in the bottom third of the page I wanted to create a visual break at the bottom of the illustration. I tried adding some silhouettes of plants, these were refined quite a lot in the final illustration.

Working this up for the final illustration was quite a challenge as i've never really coloured an entire scene in coloured pencil before. Adding the flag pole and changing the house to an old timber frame helped to give the image more context within the article. I started off by planning the composition in light pencil and marking out the various colours and textures of the fields and forest so that it became almost a paint-by-numbers process to complete.

After doing this I gradually filled in and added more layers of colour to build up the various textures. Finally I went over the whole drawing with pencil adding in the shadows and sharpening some of the line-work. Overall this took me almost three days and the physical artwork is about A4 in size. The art director was quite keen for the illustration to be quite detailed and accurate and i'm really pleased with how it worked out. Below is the finished illustration and the page in print. As you can see the grass in the foreground is more restrained and helps tie together the illustration and the titles.

British Land

I received a brochure that I had worked on in January. It was for British Land who are building a new luxury development near to Regent's Park. I was working with Egelnick & Webb who were doing all of the branding and design. Really pleased with how it's all come out. The drawings were very clean and precise and are really successful with the overall product. There are large hoardings with my illustrations on which will be in place during the building process, which I guess is now (?) I'll try to get up there on day and have a snoop around. Regent's Place is where the building is taking place.

Wembley

I went to watch to England Ghana game last night and managed to miss both of the goals. A largely forgettable match, Wembley Stadium is very impressive however.

Pick Me Up

Last week I was invited by It's Nice That to spend a few days drawing in their live illustration area. Around 40 illustrators took part and at any one time there were 5 or 6 illustrators drawing and producing one of originals. I found it really fun albeit a little strange to be drawing whilst people are walking around and watching. For the few days that I was there I worked along side lots of fantastic illustrators and everyone who stopped for a chat was really nice. Here are some photos of some of the drawings that I did.

Workshop

Last week I returned to UWE Bristol to run a two day workshop with illustrators and tutors Phil Wrigglesworth and Gary Embury. We asked the students to spend the day on location doing observation drawing and information gathering with the following day spent in the studio turning this into a six panel narrative.

Here is my attempt. It's really great doing the same brief as the students, although the original sketched were from an older sketchbook that I happened to have with me. It's always easy to forget that the students are only 6 months through their first year, some really interesting outcomes none the less.

So I have agreed to draw an illustration every day throughout February to go up on TOY's new gallery space. I'm going to be revisiting some of my reference photos that i've taken since February last year and picking out some days/moments/narratives that mean something to me, I may also do some actual observed drawing. Some Old Work

I haven't written anything of real interest for a while, this is due to laziness. My work-rate outside of commissions has been pretty shoddy but will soon need to step up a few gears due to agreeing with Chris Gray, founder of the wonderful TOY to produce a drawing every day throughout February. TOY have launched a brand new website which deserves to be filled up with lots of new work and I am next in line, after Chris Martin, to help do this.

Having read this blog post by David Foldvari a few times recently (it's titled 'Update') I decided to have a look through a load of old drawings that I did on my degree course. I've posted a few illustrations below from my first year. It's funny looking back at your old work, some of which really clearly shows influences from other illustrators or at least to me it does. Michelle Thompson was one of my tutors on my foundation course in Loughborough and I can say that there is definitely a bit of 'borrowing' going on in some of my first year work...

There's other work that I won't put up through fear of embarrassing myself and possibly Michelle as it's a bit too close for comfort.

David Foldvari in his blog is basically saying that illustration students are placing too much importance on what contemporary professional-illustrators are doing in order to influence their own work stylistically. I agree with this, and when looking around the summer graduate shows such as Freerange it can be pretty obvious. And I don't think that too many people who have been graphics or illustration students can deny that they have been so heavily influenced by contemporaries up to the point of near replication at some stage of their education ( I remember on foundation being obsessed by Banksy up to the point of spray painting shit stencils and names on road signs in Loughborough).

Somehow related to this is the attitude towards answering student's essay questions. This is something that I am fairly happy to do as I've been in the position needing a quote or reference to boost a dissertation grade from a 3rd to a 2.2, and let's be honest it's probably easier to get an email back from an illustrator working out of their bedroom in East London as opposed to getting one back from David Hockney or Ed Ruscha. I'm not to sure what other illustrators feel about this, or whether or not they do reply to student questions. I do have a bug-bear with this however, that is that after sending back a fairly well considered and lengthy reply to said student you receive absolutely no thank-you or even acknowledgement of your help. This does note bode well for students in the future needing help. Being nice to people will undoubtedly help progress your career further than simply copying someone else's drawing style. Any way, that's for another day. Here is some more work that I found; drawn in 2002/2003 or something like that.

I actually prefer a lot of these pencil drawn one's to a lot of the work I am doing right now. They seem a lot more honest and the line work far looser. Definitely something that I will hope to look at in my forth coming work. I think that this just highlights the importance to me of keeping sketchbooks and taking time away from commercial work to go out and just draw for the day. Getting bogged down with client work that is dry and clinical can become a bit tedious, so doing this drawing-a-day thing will certainly help me to do so.

Some of this work does look curiously in a similar David Foldvari-esq style. I can confirm that I don't remember having any prior knowledge of his work until I brought one of those standard-issue student illustration books like 'Hand to Eye' or 'The Big Book of Really Cool Illustrators' some time in my third year at university, that's my excuse anyway. I remember being very interested in the work of German illustrator Oliver Kugler after seeing his double page spreads in the Guardian.

Drawn text is another thing I used to do quite a lot. I've not done this in a few years and think there are people who do it a lot better than myself. I think I was referenced on a blog a while ago with my illustration being commented on as having no typographical awareness and being child-like (not in a good way). I can't find the post any more but it's probably true.

If I find any more gems of older work i'll be sure to put them up. Having read this post back I can say that my grammar and use of the English language is pretty appalling, no wonder I got a C in GCSE and then gave up. I'm off to do some proper drawing.

Rejected Drawings

Here are a couple of illustrations from a series that got rejected as part of a large job i'm currently working on. This should be a fantastic body of work once it's all completed with large scale hoardings and brochures.

Manchester City v Birmingham City

Taken a while to get these photos up. Sadly this was my last game as the illustration has been dropped by The Times due to the number crunchers deciding that the sport section were over budget. This is a massive disappointment as the commission was going really well, hopefully there'll be some scope for it to be re-introduced in the future, Wimbledon?

City of Manchester Stadium is pretty big, almost a replica of The Emirates but next to a main road in Manchester as opposed to nestled in between houses in Islington. The atmosphere wasn't that great, which seems to be the case with these huge new stadiums, the problem seems to be that the crowd are quite far from the pitch and really dispersed with corporate seating. Any-how, the Birmingham fans were making a bit of noise as usual (third time i've seen Birmingham this season). The match was a shocker.

Fulham v Aston Villa

Craven Cottage is a great old stadium and having been to so many different grounds this season feels very small in comparison to most. The good thing about this is that the photographers sit pitch-side, so not behind any advertising boards. You get a great sense of the action sitting about 4 feet from the touchline. I've been to see Fulham many times and there's always a good atmosphere, but it is by no means as load as places like Stoke or West Brom. It's now winter so i'm going to have to read up on how to use a Canon 1D in very low light as I was struggling to get anything in focus when the second half was under way.

Everton v Stoke

A week late posting these. Considering it's just around the corner from Anfield the area around Goodison Park actually shows signs of life and it's comprised of boarded up houses. And unlike a Liverpool match there seemed to be no tourists at Everton. Inside the stadium feels old in a good way, like a big version of Craven Cottage. Atmosphere wasn't great though, Stoke fans were making loads of noise but the home ground hardly made any sound until they scored late on in the second half.

West Brom v Fulham

Here are a few photos from last weekends game. Was a really shitty wet day and I got drenched before I could get my photographers issue waterproofs on. Also, being a Fulham supporter it was quite a struggle having to walk through the main stand at full-time trying to make my way back to the photographers room. Was a good game and a really good atmosphere, probably only second to Stoke in atmosphere terms.

Arsenal v Birmingham

The Emirates is quite a contrast to the Athletic ground where I saw Brighton play last weekend.. The stadium is quite amazing, and good food for the photographers too. Game was really good, although almost all of the photos came out blurry due to the low light. Fortunately i've got hold of a better camera so next week should be blur free.

Brighton & Hove Albion v Bournemouth

No Premier League football again so I was sent to a Division 1 game. This was definitely the most surreal place i've been to watch football. The walk from the station is along a really narrow and bumpy country path and the stadium is in the middle of woodland. Two thirds of the stadium are temporary stands which are a long way back from the pitch, I don't think you can see anything much form the away stand. Great game of football, being so close to the pitch you can hear all of the shouting between the players and really feel a part of the game. Brighton definitely deserved to win but a really dodgy penalty in extra time got Bournemouth a draw. I'm off to Arsenal this coming Saturday which is going to be a bit of a change form Brighton!

Birmingham Everton

Birmingham was really quick and easy to get to, although the sooner they do something with New Street station the better. The place is like an underground car park. It was a really subdued crowd at the game, Everton fans made noise every now and then but there wasn't really anything from the Birmingham fans. Game got better in the second half, first half was a shocker.

Really strange game. Anfield seems to be in the middle of rows and rows of abandoned houses, which when there's no football on I can't really imagine is the friendliest place to have a stroll around. Good crowd but not as noisy as I thought it would have been, there's a really obvious amount of tourists there so maybe that doesn't help with the atmosphere. The people in Liverpool were all really nice, it seems to be that the farther north you go to watch the football the friendly the people are, sorry Tottenham and West Ham!

It was nice not having to get a train up North for 4 hours today. I didn't realise how easy it would be to get to Spurs. White Harte Lane however looks totally shit from the outside, inside the stadium is really nice. The crowd are right on the touchline, a bit like Craven Cottage. Good atmosphere, probably a bit better than West Ham last week.

West Ham v Chelsea

Instead of cycling to Upton park I decided to get the bus which turned out to be a very poor decision! It took me 2 hours get get back home which made it a little rushed to get the work all finished on Sunday. Chelsea looked very good and hardly broke sweat during the game. Good atmosphere at Upton Park, not quite as ferocious as Stoke though.

MK Dons v Hartlepool

There was no Premier League football this weekend so I had a nice quick trip up to Milton Keynes. MK seems like a mecca for dual-carriage ways and cars in general. The stadium is really impressive and new. Despite this there were hardly any people who turned up to watch the game. I think the attendance was just over 7000, I counted 60 away fans. Atmosphere was good once it got going but for most of the time it was pretty silent. It's good to see some lower league football which was actually much better than what I had imaged it would be.

Blackburn Rovers v Arsenal

I thought that the football Stoke played was bad, but Blackburn are much uglier. Quite a nice stadium, mix of really old and new stands. It was a good-ish game, Arsenal play really nicely so it was a bit of a contrast with Blackburn basically trying to batter Arsenal with long balls for the whole 90 minutes. The Arsenal fans travelled in pretty good numbers although I had to get the same train on the way up which wasn't great.

Stoke City v Tottenham

Quite a nice walk along the canal side to get to the stadium. The Brittania stadium is on top of a hill and therefore really exposed, nice and windy. Definitely the noisiest football stadium i've ever been to. It's a shame that the football is so poor in comparison to the atmosphere. Tottenham played well although I missed Gareth Bale's goal that apparently was amazing, I was fiddling with my camera at the time.

Finally... Wigan Blackpool

I've been meaning to out some of my photos from the football up but i've been very busy and lazy and have only just got round to doing so. ANy way, here's the first game I went to, WIgan Blackpool back on 14 August, Blackpool won 4 nil.

Wigan's stadium is in a massive retail park and the atmosphere was pretty subdued for the first game of the season. The Blackpool fans were great though and surprisingly friendly.

I have been without internet for some time now, therefore very few updates. I'm really excited about The Times 'Game' gig that i'm working on at the moment. So far i've been to Wigan v Blackpool, Stoke v Spurs, and am off to Blackburn v Arsenal this coming Saturday. Apart from the long journeys up north it's been great. Getting paid to watch football and then illustrate it is a dream job for me!

Once I have internet up and running I put some match day photos up, maybe some stadium reviews.

Lsatly, having stood next to Crouchy last weekend I have seen first hand how incredibly tall and thin he is.

Along with the super Nicholas Saunders I am organising and curating an exhibition at the Howies Gallery in Bristol from 1st October for a month. The show will be featuring 12 or so illustrators who have worked for howies to decorate their catalogues over the past 4 years. The list so far is as follows....

Nick Goss

Really beautifully subtle painting by Nick Goss who graduated from the Royal Academy of Art last year. I saw the Goss man's work at the RA show last summer and now a new collection of Nick's paintings are featuring in the current Saatchi show over in Chelsea. I would very much like on of these to be hanging above the fire place in my new house I move into next week.

Some people draw celebrities and post them on online galleries which is brilliant.

I have recently started a project drawing inspiration form this. At the start of the year a book of portraits drawn by Premier League footballers was auctioned off for charity. Most of the drawings were terrible as one would have expected, but I guess there aren't many artists who can play footballer particularly well. Here is Wayne Rooney's self portrait..

There seems to be a huge disconnect between celebrities, in this case footballer, and the public who idolise them and in many cases help to fund them. There are huge barriers enforced to prevent these super humans from actually interacting with common people and actually being able to sample what real life is like (maybe they can remember back to the days at 15 years old before super stardom). I guess mainly the reason that people with lots of money are kept apart from people without lots of money is probably because people would generally go beserk if they saw David Beckham in the Post Office buying a book of stamps. Although I did once carry a bag of multi-purpose compost to George Best's car for him and no one really bothered him when he was walking around the garden centre. So I suppose the hype is created by the media and money men to help sell things, in turn creating celebrity sports-people, in turn separating them from normal people.

So, I'm going to try to break down some of these barriers in a very small and insignificant way by attempting to interact with some of these famous people. Drawing someone's portrait is a pretty intimate thing, especially when they have no knowledge that you are doing so. Over the next month i'll be drawing footballers and sending them their portrait with a letter. In return I hope they will sign and return my drawing. I'd imagine that something similar has been done before, but this is more for my own amusement and self-interest as opposed to anything poignant. I'm hoping to exhibit my interactions eventually, fingers crossed I get some correspondence. Below is my Wayne Rooney, I hope he likes it.

Hand Of God prints

I recently recieved a few prints of the Hand Of God illustration that I drew for Umbro. I have just posted one, and now there is only one left. The print is A3 size, giclee on paper, it's more like a poster than a print if that makes sense. Off to Bristol tomorrow to run a two day workshop at UWE. Had a busy week ending up at Portsmouth drawing a festival themed mural in a new pub called The Kraken Wakes.

Spent today working with the Architecture Foundation and the Stephen Lawrence Trust helping to run a drawing workshop in Deptford. We took 14 teenagers around the area to draw abandoned spaces and worked with architects to propose solutions on how the space can be better used.

I have just finished a mural at the howies shop on Carnaby Street in London. 3 days later I have a sore bum and tired eyes but pleased with the results!

I hope to hand-deliver my contribution for the Go Red! consequences charity auction tomorrow to The Partners design studio in Smithfields. Go Red! is a fund-raising campaign set up on behalf of Richard House Children's Hospice in London. I drew the body and will be interesting to see who's head and legs will be added!
